Started in 2016, this project at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) was scheduled in phases with other construction trades re-fitting and modernizing the interior spaces. Asbestos abatement and mould remediation work were undertaken prior to general demolition and followed by renovations. Abatement was completed utilizing Type 1, 2 and 3 asbestos work procedures, including use of the glove-bag technique for pipe insulation removal.
Type 1 and 2 mould remediation work procedures were employed for areas impacted with mould or water intrusion. When feasible, Inflector staff would also provide clean demolition work to assist in maintaining the project schedule. In addition, removal work complied with hospital infection control standards.
The general contractor set tight schedules on each phase which were met and exceeded by extending work hours and/or a larger work force, as well as some evening work, to ensure little or no impact to hospital operations.
The abatement work was completed on time and the demolition schedule was achieved.
