As we celebrate Women in Construction Week 2022, we are proud to highlight some of the the women on our team who have made an impact here at Inflector within this competitive, male-dominated industry.

Kacey Taylor is a Project Manager from our Toronto division who has been a pivotal member of our largest and most complicated project to date. Part of the Inflector family for almost 3 years, we have watched Kacey excel and grow during her time working with us.

We asked Kacey a few questions about her career journey, her role as a Project Manager with Inflector, and what being a woman in construction means to her. Keep reading to find out her key insights.

How did you find your way to where you are today? Tell us about your professional journey.

I pursued my post graduate diploma in Environmental Project Management. This lead me to initiate my career in construction with a position at an excavation and earthworks company. My first project was a mine site remediation project, primarily cleaning various types of hazardous waste. I was inspired by this project and realized how much I enjoyed the different aspects of remediation. When the opportunity to work at Inflector came about, I jumped at the chance to be involved in one of the largest abatement projects in Canada.

What motivations fueled or inspired your career path?

I was first exposed to environmental remediation through courses I took in university, which ultimately led me to change my major to be more environmentally focused. At that point in time, I never thought I’d see myself in construction. But now that I’ve experienced working in the industry, I truly couldn’t see myself anywhere else!

What does a typical work day in your position look like?

Every day is different, which is what I love most about my job. As a Project Manager, you learn to adjust plans to ensure a project can continue to run successfully. Working closely with our field team, I’m constantly monitoring the day-to-day activities, making sure we are meeting the project schedule, staying within budget and maintaining clear communication with clients to meet their expectations. I work with an amazing team that supports one another through challenges the more complex projects may bring on.

You have been pivotal member of Inflector’s largest and most complicated project yet – what does this mean to you?

Being part of such a large and complex project like The Macdonald Block Reconstruction Project is one of the most rewarding and challenging things I’ve ever had to do. After almost 3 years on this project, I have learned so much about the intricacies of the trade, including how to coordinate multiple scopes of work with our workforce and subcontractors, and ultimately, what it takes to successfully run a project of this size.

I’m not sure if there will ever be another abatement job of this size again, so I’m grateful to have the opportunity to learn from something of this magnitude early on in my career.

What advice, tools or resources would you suggest to someone interested in the same career as you?

I believe that no matter what stage you are at in your career, you should push yourself to learn and grow by embracing challenges as they come. Don’t be afraid of failure. I’ve learned a lot from my successes, but I’ve learned more from the mistakes that I’ve made.

How has Inflector supported you in your career development?

Inflector has always ensured I have the tools and resources to do my job successfully and produce quality work for our clients. I have amazing mentors who encourage me to expand my knowledge and skill set with professional development courses, networking and managing more complex projects.

What were the greatest challenges or learning curves you’ve overcome working on the MacDonald Block Reconstruction Project?

The Macdonald Block Project has definitely had its challenges. Not only do we have multiple scopes of work happening concurrently across almost two million sq.ft., each area of the job poses varying obstacles. Many times throughout the project, we thought we had the methodology for a specific scope ironed out, only to have the conditions change the next day. I’ve learned to always be prepared for changing and unexpected conditions, as well as how to be proactive with planning our work and reacting quickly when things out of our control change that plan.

Which goals are you working towards in your professional journey?

I’m focused on learning as much as possible about the industry through involvement in more complex projects and professional development. I’m also working towards writing my Project Management Professional (PMP) exam.

What does being a woman excelling in a male-dominated industry mean to you?

I’m fortunate that I’m in a position to not only excel in this industry, but that I am surrounded by people who support women in leadership. I would not be where I am today if it was not for my own mentors in my professional and personal life.

As women in a male dominated industry, we all need to support and assist in one another’s development. Developing a network of professionals with this same goal is key to our overall success in the construction industry. I’m lucky enough to be part of a team of people that advocate for women and pushes for all women in this industry to grow and succeed.

What are your hobbies or passions outside of work?

I love to cook and bake. Most weekends you can find me in the kitchen testing out new recipes or curled up with a good thriller novel.
